Hey all: I finally have something worth writing about Last Saturday (13 November, 2004) LauraSis, her mom & I went to Biloxi, Mississippi to see Davy! The last I saw a Monkee (well, 2 Monkees) was in August of 2002, in LA. It had also, unfortunately, been quite a while since Laura & I have seen each other--Life gets in the way sometimes, y'know? At any rate, it was a quick trip, as Laura had to work both Saturday and Sunday (stupid bosses...) So she didn't pick me up till around 4:30. Then an hour and a half drive to the Isle of Capri casino in Biloxi. It was a free show, but we had to get 'players' cards' to get tickets. Easier than anticipated, it only took a few minutes (although now, apparently, I'm a registered gambler) Then we had about 45 minutes til the doors opened. I was starving, so we found food. I'll also mention that I've been dizzy lately--sinuses, vertigo perhaps? which made it dificult to get as excited as I usually do--I pretty much wanted to lay down and nap. But I'm glad I didn't. Ok. went in 7:15ish, found *great* seats front row, left of the stage (so that we were looking more at the side than front of the stage) Show started at 8:00. Davy was his usual wonderful self. Moved all over, so that he sang toward us (to us) many times-- in other words, didn't just play to center. Before the show started, Dave Alexander passed by, tapping Laura on the shoulder, then moving so she couldn't see who it was. Funny moment, but ya hadda be there. Let's see--started with erm, something Monkee,well-known, can't remember-- followed with Valerie (still one of my favorites). Did his 'Oliver' medley; while he was introducing it, a girl in the front row got up and started to leave. "Oy!" David shouted. what do you mean by leaving? She replied that she wanted to get out and be back before he started singing again. The look on his face was priceless. After she left, he reached down, picked up her vacated chair, and put in on the stage in front of the drums. He told the audience: Don't tell her where it is; we'll show 'er, I'l start singing and she'll miss the song.... Then he started on the medly (consider yourself) As anticipated, she returned to find an empty spot where her seat had been. She looks round, and Davy, without missing a beat, hands her up on stage and escorts her to her chair. As the song moves into 'I would do anything' (or whatever it's called) he offers his hand and sings to her, walking & dancing her across the stage, even letting her play his tambourine. He gave her a kiss and handed her back off the stage, handing the chair down to her boyfriend. It was sweet and funny--if only it had been me ;-) except I would have fainted.... He was funny, told a lot of jokes--many of them pretty randy--and many of which I'd heard before, but it just seemed that he did a lot more talking than singing. My only complaint, and not much of one, at that. He did 'Papa Gene's blues'--which I loved!, Is you is or is you ain't my baby, I'll love you forever, Girl (during which this big drunk guy stood in front of us blocking our view. grrr) a few ohers I of course can't remember, finishing with (nope, not coming to me). Left the stage--several people left; came back finished for real with Daydream believer & No time. During the encore, everone was on their feet (it's ok when everyone does it) Big mistake for me--it was hard enough with the seat dancing/ head rocking I'd been doing--when I stood up and started doing the monkey, I sorta had to flop back in my seat.If I wasn't dizzy before, I sure was dizzy now! But it was worth it I'm thinking Laura got some good pics, too. All in all a really fun evening. Stopped briefly on the way out to say hi to a friend of Laura's, then left. drove home; in bed by midnight. I dunno, maybe I'm getting old, but it didn't bother me at all that I didn't get another kiss. ;-) Peace! Jan --My penguin was not Peter Tork
