21 August 1999 My year of teen idols continues: Peter Noone Laura & I didd indeed go to see 'the other Peter' on Saturday night. It was a lot of fun. The day started out at work...then Laura picked me up and wwe drove out to the casino in Kenner. Got there starving. So I went to the concessionaires' in the casino proper. A lady shoves a piece of paper in my hand, says: "I don't have time to wait. Here. You take this." It was a $10 comp ticket. Ten bucks worth of free food and drink! I hit the jackpot, and I didn't even get near the gaming area. It was *hot*. Laura and I were pretty much alone from 12:30 till close to 3:45ish, when two women showed up, water pistols in hand....By 5, there were maybe a dozen of us, and it started raining buckets. The blue-shirt casino guylet us in 2 hours early, so we got great seats--right up front next to the steps leading to the stage. I suppose the rain kept the crowd down, but it had stopped by the time the show started. Mr. Noone puts on a great show! He did several of my favorite herman's Hermits' songs, as well as some I'd never heard before. He was funny as well. Got into a water fight with the water-pistol bearers-- he'd open a bottle of water, take a sip, then lay it on the ground. Aim it carefully then stomp on it, spraying them with water. (One of these he later kicked off stage. I picked it up, drank the tiny bit of water left in it, and had him sign it later. What the h*ll am I supposed to do with a piece of trash with Peter Noone's signature on it? What was I thinking?) He even made a few Davy Jones jokes during the course of the evening, at one point braking into "hey, hey we're the M...No wait, that's not right!" I forget during which song he came down into the audience, took up a cd from the sale table and gave it to an audience member. This he did 3 times before returning to the stage. He did 'The Battle of New Orleans'.....I know he's done it at other shows, but it was sort of special considering where we were, ending with: "gaw, I hate that song..." At any rate, we wound up about 8 rows back for the second show, which was just as good as the first. He comes on stage, and the first 3 rows stood up. Grrr....A lovely person in the 5th row manages to get their attention with her fan and lets thenm know they were being inappropriate. I gave her a thumbs up....After that it was excellent. Afterwards, we did the autograph line thing. We're maybe a dozen back. He looks up, sees Laura, grins, "Hi, Laura!" It's nice having friends in high (or low, depending) places! When we got up to him, he gave her a big hug. She introduces me to him, and he signed both the cassette I'd bought and the water bottle I said to him: "what can I say? I'm a 36 year old teeny-bopper!" Then he puts his arm around me and turns me around so Laura could snap our picture. I thanked him, and as we walked away, he shouted, "Nice meeting you Jan!" The man is such a sweetheart! Then we went to the hotel, where we waited and waited for him to come down. (It wasn't me... Laura's the groupie here ;-) ) He finally did, looking absolutelyu zonked. But he was still gracious enough to come to us, sign and pose for some other girls there, and then said goodnight, shaking my hand and giving Laura and her mom each a kiss. It's funny, 'cause I never got that flutter I got with Davy. It was just like meeting a friend of a friend. I guess it's because, although I'm a fan, he was never one of "my boys". All in all, I had a wonderful time!
